The Super Bowl is an event that has something for everyone. Entertainment fans have the halftime. Food lovers have wings. Football fans have the big game (Geaux Saints!). And the ads bring everyone together as, for the only time in the year, the TV ads are anticipated almost as much as the event.

While not a top year in Super Bowl advertising, there were a few gems worth some recognition. Here are my top five picks for this year’s best Super Bowl spots:

Brand: Snickers
Title: Betty White

Tidbits: Winner of this year’s USA Today’s Ad Meter, the commercial features stars Betty While and Abe Vigoda as snickers deprived football players. Have confidence in the power of special effects and stand-ins or you might be disturbed by the pummeling Betty White suffers in this spot. Watch out for her smack talk!

Brand: Google
Title: Parisian Love

Tidbits: In addition to being Google’s first ever TV spot, this sweet, understated ad has created a great deal of buzz and even some parodies already. The only hinderance to the ad’s effectiveness is their expectation that the viewer will read the entire storyline of search terms. So if you’re not actively watching from the beginning, this could be a problem. The ad is excellent at showing off Google’s abilities to provide answers to an individual’s questions as they go through life. It is also very romantic and a real tearjerker.

Brand: Budweiser
Title: Fences

Tidbits: Budweiser had a lot of ads throughout the game for their various brands, but this spot is by far the best and brings back the classic Buweiser Clydesdale horse. The story follows a young Clydesdale colt and a young calf’s friendship despite the fence between them. They are eventually united when the bull is grown up and busts through the fence to run alongside his friend. A very heart warming ad.

Brand: Monster
Title:  Fiddling Beaver

Tidbits: During a difficult time for many struggling to find work in a down economy, Monster went with a humorous “rags to riches” story of a violin playing beaver achieving success through using the monster website. Very high ranking on the cute scale and tells an excellent success story from using their service.

Brand: NFL
Title: Best Fans

Tidbits: The NFL spot is a very classy “Thank You” for the loyalty and enthusiasm fans bring to the league. It begins with an amazing play from the season of Reggie Bush leaping over a Dolphins player to get a touchdown. The rest shows fans excitedly embracing their favorite teams. This spot stands out for the warm and sincere emotions that it evokes.
