German cabinet backs €50M hate speech fines for social media firms

The German cabinet has backed a proposals to hit social media firms with fines of up to 5 million Euros for illegal content not removed in a timely manner, and ten times the penalty if they fail to promptly remove illegal hate speech from their platforms. What is a timely manner in the eyes of German legislators? Within seven days for illegal content, and only 24 hours after notification of a complaint of “obviously criminal content.” While German lawmakers are obviously targeting the major players such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google’s YouTube, will they eventually set their sights on smaller social networks, blogs, and other websites?

At Scale, Rare Events Aren’t Rare

Takeaway: I like stories that remind us to think of values relatively. Coding a system to automatically shut down if it thinks a $750,000 component is at risk of breaking is a 100% always good idea, right? Well, it depends on the context. In this story’s case, it was actually cheaper to accept the risk to the component — because shutting down the system lead to hundreds of millions in losses.

Why some of us don't have one true calling

Jeanette Larsen

Takeaway: A fascinating talk about those out there, deemed multipotentialites, who aren't wired to specialize in only one field for their entire career. The speaker, Emilie Wapnick, shares the theory that these people come with unique skills: idea synthesis, rapid learning, and adaptability.

Wapnick claims, "As a society, we have a vested interest in encouraging multipotentialites to be themselves. We have a lot of complex, multidimensional problems in the world right now, and we need creative, out-of-the-box thinkers to tackle them."
